So-Hyun Bae

graphic designer and typographer, Korea/France
Bio
So-Hyun Bae is a Korean-French graphic designer and typographer. As she spent her childhood moving around between Korea, France and the United States, learning new languages were for her a way to survive in different environments. Eventually, these linguistic adaptations lead her to develop a deeper interest for languages. Realizing that typography was at the intersection of her interests for graphic design and languages, she carried out between 2018 and 2020 a research on multilingual design at the ANRT(Atelier national de recherche typographique, Nancy, France).
About the talk
In Between Hangul and Latin
So-Hyun grew up in a trilingual environment, between Korean, French, and English, between Hangul and Latin, and as these languages and scripts blend within her, she seeks ways to mix and match them into one. During her talk, she will give us a glimpse into her imagination of what her language looks like and share with us the typographic work she has developed during her Master at the Haute école des arts du Rhin (HeaR, Strasbourg, France) and at the Atelier national de recherche typographique (ANRT, Nancy, France), where she carried out a research on multilingual design based on her own trilingualism.
